Aims of this study >
It has long been the opinion of the writer th at the following
b ehav lor tea its or beh avior characteristics ar e t he pre d bains at 3
cfcarac terist lcs of the
masses. In this proposed study, tho
investigator proposes to relate certain eco logical __ factor 0 to ~ the
formation of soaecritical behavioral characteristics offtfffifitftt
Employing c oh t en tl^a naly sis oflhist orical r so orda the investigator

1) lack of religious feelin g (in the sense of a sup ernatural be ing?,
and hence lack of an org anized church ; ;
2) Aversion to violence?
?) Passivity to brute forces, either natural or human;
4) Fatalistic view towards 3 life I the atrohg tendency for one to adjust
or adap t t o the on e’senvironcont, however a dverse, rather than
to modify or c onquer the environment;
5) Lack o f spirit of adventure; ~
6) Lack of individual initiative; 1
7) Lack of the desire to be independent or different from others; ~
rather* the strong tendenoy to conform to th e existing social
requirements and to imitate or follow the ones who have been
sauces oful sociall y or in business ;
8) Lack of the spirit of team work; ‘ ;
9) The paradoxical tendency of tho individuals ; On the one hand he
is most eelf-eacrificial in the family - almost to the point of
selflessness ; on the other, outside th e family, he can be most
eel fish without moral or legal restraints;
10) Indifference to the sufforing of other people |

12) The feeling of racial superiority ;

from a "h ydraulic society? founded up on th e proposition that the
individual had to be forced to do what was necessary for his
society and thus for himself) but always with an inner feeling
of bitter resentment or hatred and r ea diness to avenge authorities
when they axe overthrown andlm the run.
These behavioral characteristics have confronted the
$08$£SjS& with a number of serious psychological ^eble^rjg^ReiiCIZIII^
revolu tionary efforts. Our second step in thisstudy, there fore, will
be to anyalyse the methods b y rhich the Communist s endeavor to solve
these psycholog ical problems*
A third ste p in this study will be an Investi gation of tho successes
and failures of tho Coonsunists in thoir efforts to solve there problems
to date; and an analysis of the major conflicts be tween
hnracter

and CoEUBimist policy shich invit&bly raust be resolved in the future.
Methods!
In partsone and tsjo of our study wr shall edopt a method of Content
analysis of certain historical documents and records. .
V'
In our third step of investigation we shall employ tliroo general
methods: (a) observation of the behavior of the
of various age
groups who from ti»e to time corae froa the (b) interviewing
those people i and (o) givin g tests to the younger (school ago) groups
brought up in the 1
daring the last decade.
We shall desig n our teat fo res in such a wa y as to dis c ove r these 1:
children's attitudes toward si (1) the state vs. the individual} (2)
family* parents and other relatives; (5) various religions | (*0 physical
moral concep ts on practical matters (as a gainst abstract moral principles);
(5) econosic and political s ystems; leading personalities in history;
(?) arts* drama and literature} and (8) personal 1 p lans and p ersona l
ambitions for the future.
In oar observations and interviews of the people© who have resided
in the laljfiteBl under the Communist, sp ecia l attention will be given f
to the inflaencezoflthe attitudes and other behavior characteristics
of the old er^g ene rati o n over th e younger generation who are brought
up mainly or solel yunder tho Communist r ole . ,
Special points of emphasis :
Based Oa^t h el findings o f this inve stig ation 1 of the behavior :
characteristics of the old and young who have resided in the
Communist during the last decade a tentative prognosis will be
made as to how far an accomp lishment of t heComadnist Revolutionary
ef for fc could be expectedr fro a^pBychological standpoint-
Kaay o f the above mentioned behavioral charao teris t ic s are closely
interrelated. Host of these behavior traits are bred in the family
from generation to generation. Therefore in our historical analysis
we shall pay special attention to the clan iaa ( the writer
prefers this term to "familialiam" or "familysystem”).
(3) th® building-up of a distorted .
theft Closely linked up with clanis®}
{h} artificial creation of an elite class; (5) setting up an artificial
and maintaining ar natural iron curtain throughout th® centuries} and
(6) brut® force I as a last resort i as a deterrent for individual — „ : : —
deviation hr dis ob edien ce. In our historical i nvestigat ion w e shall
try to collect factual evidence s hosing how these pheaoraena were
accomplished ^and 'fro# "they affect the modes of thinking and patterns
of behavior of the peo ple during each period*
In our study of the Coaminist psychological techniques in ruling
we shall try to compare the similarities and differences between
the ancient rulers and aodern Cornmanists, and to find out what
tangible affects on th e behavior patterns of the masses have taken place.
In this study special attention will be devoted to the fa ct that
in the ah ova li st of behavioral cha racteristics there are certain
characteristi cs whi c h w i ll Wrk favorably for th e Communist efforts in Z
which was

society while certain other s with their so de ep
see how well th® Communists ex ploit the favour able traits and what
scans they have emplo yed to coabat or destroy t he: unfavourable ones.
Relationship to othor studies'll
Many of the above listed behavioral traits or characteristics of
the iRflaMtiThav® been frequently mentioned in the sritings of the
experts. But they are very often fragmentary and scattered
in various books and articles and more often than not, either erroneous,
misleading or superficial in their interpretations or evaluations.
As far as this writer is aware, there has been no attempt to put t hes e
• f
* . . y - Suplimentar y N otes p#
It is to be noted that the lists of ecoiogocal factors (eco-
logical variables ) and behavioral characteristics (defendant
variables) are merely tentative ones and are to be grouped into
smaller numbers of categ ories a ccording to theirs similarities
and differenc es i n nature and according to the convenience of
the analytical procedures. And a3 the investigation is making
progress , nev ecological factors and new behavioral character- :
istics will appear to require attention and a re grou ping or
reorganization of the categories of both ecological factors and
behavior characteristics will become necessary^ so as to include
the new factors or new characteristics. Such organization and
re-organization will be reportedto the Society as soon as it
Is done.
The investigator has now commenced to work ; out somewhat in
detail a concrete procedure for historical analysis. As Soon as
this is completed, a copy will be submitted tothe Society.
Detailed procedures for observation on^behavio^and IhterviewsIlEzZ
and giving tests willlbe worked out in later stage, _ -
It appears=thalLlthe scope a J,n_the^propos_ed plan is somewhat
vast. However , as soon as the detailed^h^itoricalTprbcedure isZlIIZZI
worked out, the scope will be consequently narrowed down and the
wors in view will be more concrete and precise/ The same i a
applied to observation oflbehaViol', interviews and tests in a
later stage of the^inveatigation. 'v
There is a relationship between p resen t re - 0 _,
search and this proposed plan which may be briefly sated
stated as follows:-
(1) Both gQ^^ova ras the same goal; the sc ientific under-
s tending of the MM M HM t national character.
1
P, 7^.(cont*d)
(2) Dr.
tries to reach hi
;oal by basic scientific
she individual while
approach, emphasing the personality^ of the individual while
this proposed investig ation will try to r each its goal through
historieo-ecological approach , that is, to find its basic factors
for the formation of the personality. :
(5) aim is to discover certain national |
characteristics without presum ption, hence , hi 3 method is inductive,
while this proposed investigation is more or less b ased on the
investigator's p revious assumptions which are t o be verified by
historical analysis, hence, the method is more deductive than
inductive.
(4) Dr. interest is primarily in the development
of MfllttoiP ' ' scientific study in psychology,
while the present investigator is also interested in the bearings
of the historical rooted traits on Communist's revolution and
vice-versa. •
